Hello friends! Figured that I'd make a nutrition relation Q&A blog since I get asked SO much about topics pertaining to nutrition. I asked my snapchat (@katieweykampfit) for some questions and here is what they came up with!
2. Do you always shop organic? I really try my best to. It's hard as a college student with a budget but I definitely think it's worth it. If I could, I would purchase as local and organic as possible. It's all personal preference and there seems to not be enough research to claim "Organic is better/worse" but I believe avoiding the GMOs as much as possible is worth it in overall health. Keeping in mind that there are a lot of toxins out there now that we simply don't understand their full impact on our bodies yet. Especially since each individual is so different in terms of reacting to foods, preservatives, chemicals etc. it's hard to have a one size fits all answer. So do I always shop organic? not necessarily... due to budget and let's face it, will-power of avoiding the other yummy non-organic foods. But I do my best! 3. What are your opinions on detoxes? This completely depends on the "detox" and also the reader's perception of what they think a "detox" is suppose to do. I don't really pay much attention to those tea detoxes, or juicing detoxes because I'm not very knowledgeable on those specifically. However, I have done one detox a couple months ago and it was from Thomas Delauer called the Organic Total Body Reboot. I had a really good experience with it! had higher energy levels and I had pretty much no signs of bloating. This "detox" had me eating very plant based, absolutely no junk or prepackaged anything. However, it was a very low carbohydrate plan and the cravings got very bad. I made a YouTube video talking more about it here. 4. How do you deal with bloating and maintaining a lean stomach? Haha I hate feeling bloated, honestly I don't know anyone who enjoys it. The way my diet is right now I'd say I eat 80% clean and 20% well...splurging. Heck, some days I splurge more and other days I just eat A LOT of food in general (#stressedoutcollegegirl). But to deal with it I simply just have to clean up my diet. I find that my body bloats in response to eating certain foods (for me I found it was things like dairy, gluten, process sugars etc.) I'm not allergic to any foods but I'm sure you can relate to that yucky feeling you get after eating something you probably should've eaten less of. Also I noticed that on the day's I let loose I wouldn't drink much water. So to fix that I start my day with a cup of tea before going to class and then carry a water bottle with me during the day. (I use a super nice glass one that you can find here). So what does clean eating for me look like? Lots of fruits and veggies, lean meats like chicken breast and ground turkey, complex carbohydrates like sprouted rice, and I ALWAYS have Ghiradelli dark chocolate squares on hand to end the day with. My favorite clean eating snack for on the go are Lara bars! If I'm being extra picky I'll double check Lara bar labels for added sugars :) We all know we can't out-train a bad diet but when performing exercises (especially compound lifts) be sure to stay conscious of contracting your core and engaging those muscles! You may not be doing a workout specifically for abs but they can still get a good burn! If you have fitness related questions, see if I answered them on my FAQs blog over in "Fitness" xo, Katie
